Fic discussion: The Immortal Cup
Thursday, June 4th, 2015 04:19 amI’m just curious, how would you work a Jalec storyline in the series, considering that in the current canon parabatai aren’t allowed to be romantically involved with one another? Sorry ‘bout bothering you with this!
Well, first of all, you have to remember that not being allowed to do something doesn’t mean you’re not able to do it. Just ‘cause you’re not allowed to eat ice cream doesn’t mean you can’t walk to the freezer and have a bowl of it anyway.
Secondly, the parabatai bond is said to be a very close one. Parabatais are encouraged to privilege their partnership over all others (”closer than brothers”, in a canon that puts a lot of emphasis on bloodlines) which would lead to at least some partnership taking a turn for the non-platonic.
Once you envision Jace and Alec with that in mind, frankly, the storyline practically writes itself. They’ve known each other all their lives, they’re extremely close, they’ve never particularly considered dating as an actual prospect/possibility (although, admittedly, for different reasons). Enter Magnus, who openly flirts with Alec on their first meeting, and Jace very much does. not. approve while Alec is.. vaguely curious, perhaps.
This forces both of them to reevaluate what they want and who they want to be with (romantically or not) and considering I’ve decided to add a certain amount of telepathy as one of the elements of a parabatai partnerships (for several reasons I won’t detail in this post, but feel free to ask if you want) at some point they will have to discuss it. And then they decide to change the nature of their relationship.
(Also I have something planned for Jace that will act as a second catalyst for him to reevaluate what’s important to him and the kind of relationship he wants to have with Alec and other persons he knows so, there’s that, too^^)
Also, you didn’t bother me at all, don’t worry :)
