My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I’d say it’s more of a 3.5 but I’m rounding up because i really like Jalil and the others :)
I’ve actually read that book before–my cousins have it lying around somewhere and one summer I read the first page out of curiosityu and didn’t put the book down until I’d finished the three enormous volumes of the collection edition.
I can’t say it’s gripped me quite as much this time around, but it’s still enjoyable and neatly written–I like that David & co react in a realistic way to their world traveling, and that they’re realistically wary and freaked out. I like that they don’t get involved in war out of ‘this is the right thing to do’ (tho that happens and can be a very noble thing to do, it’s just been done and overdone) but out of 'the enemy’s going to try and kill us anyway, might as well try to fight myself a way out’.
I also appreciate the diversity among vikings, which is most likely more historically-accurate than the all-white crowds we usually see in movies. I’m really enjoying this reread so far tbh, and I’ll be happy to start the next book on my way home tonight :)
