Technically, I’m not supposed to work on Nano today as I have to prepare for a meeting with my thesis director but I doubt it’s going to take that long to answer @snarktheater‘s question of the day, so here goes.
How and why did you choose your title?
The working title for my City of Bones rewrite is, so far, The Immortal Cup.
It comes from a couple things at once. First, the Mortal Instruments, in y version, are renamed the Immortal Instruments, for the simple reason that they were given by ‘angels’ and angels are supposed to be immortal.
The second reason is that the Cup’s importance to Nephilim’s renewal of their population is much more central in my version than in canon. In canon, Nephilim blood is dominant: if they would just start making babies with mundanes, they’d get new nephilims pretty fast.
In my version, the ‘angels’ who created Nephilim were aliens caught in a war with ‘demons’ who basically played GMO with humans (I say basically because the science isn’t 100% accurate, but it’s inspired). The result is that Nephilim blood is not dominant and any inter-species union results into someone who is very much not a Nephilim. Hence, more need for the Cup, especially in case of war or widespread epidemics.
A third reason (although it’s not the main one) is that my version of COB places a stronger, almost religious emphasis on the instruments, so the quest for the Cup takes on a spiritual value for Jace and the Lightwoods which, I hope, I’ll manage to illustrate in the story (and use to show some ofthe cultural differences between Clary and her new friends).
And last but not least, considering all three instruments are essential to summoming Raziel in COG, I figured starting out wiht the Cup would allow me to continue with the other two, should I decide to go on rewriting the series ;)
