Sunday, April 10th, 2016 03:55 pmPet peeve: when people translate “Voldemort” as “Fleeing from Death” because 1) that’s not what it means and 2) your interpretation of what that means, thematically, for the character is incorrect as a result.
“Vol de mort“ means (literally) “flight of death” the same way you could talk about a “vol de corbeaux” a flight/group of crow. The reference isn’t about how Voldemort is trying to escape death it’s about how he’s become death, which is both extremely grand and self-absorbed (which fits Tom Riddle’s personna lbr) and also fitting with Voldemort’s presence and influence on the wizarding world.
