Note: This review contains mild spoilers for the movie.

One of my favorite things about Captain America: Winter Soldier was the way the Russo brothers departed from the usual looks and codes of your usual super-hero flick to give their story a spy-movie feel, which in my opinion was a good call because it gave Winter Soldier a look that distinguished it from the other MCU sub-franchises and contributed to avoid boredom during phase one of Marvel's plans.

Overall,I think there was an attempt to do something similar with Civil War: the first part in particular has several shots that reminded me of movies set in the former USSR or East Germany (Goodbye Lenin, in particular, came to mind) and that worked pretty well, especially for a story that was marketed as being very Bucky-heavy and takes root in the Winter Soldier program.

The problem, however, is that those visual and thematic decisions don't really hold up.
